Student Union Memberships

This page outlines the different type of memberships that are possible at UWS Union and the different privileges they enjoy.

Please note, that no one can hold more than one type of SU membership at any one time and all memberships are subject to the individual's continued compliance with the Union's policies and code of conduct. If you have any questions please email sauws@uws.ac.uk.

 


Student Member

Who is this?

  • All current UWS Students
  • Sabbatical Officers

 

What can they do?

Access to all Union services including:

  • Advice Service
  • Be a student Rep
  • Joining or leading a society
  • Union volunteering opportunities
  • Standing for and voting in our elections
  • Attend Union meetings, with full speaking and voting rights. 
  • Sign in Guests to the Union's Bars and Cafes

 


Associate Member

 

Who is this?

  • Any student that wishes to opt out of SU membership at enrolment
  • All UWS Staff
  • All UWS Union staff

 

What can they do?

Access to the following services:

  • Advice Service
  • Becoming a Student Rep
  • Join a society
  • Union volunteering opportunities

 

What can't they do?

  • Stand for or vote in our elections
  • Attend Union meetings
  • Sign in guests to the Union's bars and cafes

Lifetime Member

Who is this?

  • A Lifetime Membership is granted to past members of the Union, subject to a fee and approval by the Union's Board of Trustees

 

What can they do?

Access to the following Services:

  • Advice Service
  • Becoming a Student Rep
  • Join a society
  • Union volunteering opportunities

 

What can't they do?

  • Stand for or vote in our elections
  • Attend Union meetings
  • Sign in guests to the Union's bars and cafes

 


Honorary Life Member

 

Who is this?

  • Granted to past members of the Union in recognition to their contribution to the Union by the Board of Trustees.
  • We also honour the life memberships given by our previous institutions UPSA and BCSU

 

What can they do?

Access to the following Services:

  • Advice Service
  • Becoming a Student Rep
  • Join a society
  • Union volunteering opportunities

 

What can't they do?

  • Stand for or vote in our elections
  • Attend Union meetings
  • Sign in guests to the Union's bars and cafe

 

 

Who can use our Bars and Cafes?

Your Student Union is a private members club and as such there are restrictions on who can enter. 

You can use the Union if:

  • You are a UWS Student - if you are under 18 you can still access the bars and cafes provided you pledge not to consume alcohol until your 18th Birthday. You may also sign in up to 4 guests who have appropriate ID and are over the age of 18. If you have opted out of Union membership, you may still enter the Union but you will be unable to sign in guests. 
  • You are a student at another College or University - You can use the Union if you attend another University or College in Scotland. You must be over the age of 18 and have your student card AND a recognised form of photographic ID. You may also sign in up to 2 guests, who have appropriate ID and are over the age of 18
  • You are a guest of a UWS Student or a guest of another College or University Student - UWS Students can sign in up to 4 guests into the Union. These guests must be over the age of 18 and have photographic ID. They also must be willing to provide their address to us when signing in. Students from other Colleges or University's can sign in two guests. These guests must be over the age of 18 and have photographic ID. They also must be willing to provide their address to us when signing in.
