Make a change and have your voice heard at UWS by becoming a student rep, sharing your policy ideas, or simply letting us know how your university experience is going.

Your Union is independent from UWS and exists to represent you. By bringing students together, we make your voices louder and make sure they are heard. We speak up for students and work with the University to improve your education and wider student experience.

Our new Student Voice system gives you lots of different ways to have your say. You can speak to your representatives, attend meetings and forums, join a Student Network, share an idea, take part in a campaign or stand to represent other students.

As you can see, there are lots of ways to get involved, make a difference and have your voice heard. Find the opportunity that works for you and get involved with your Union. Together, our voices are louder.

Your representatives

Students are represented at every level, from your class and faculty to the whole University.

Your President and Vice President for Education are full-time elected officers. They lead your Union and represent all UWS students.

They work with the University and other organisations to raise the issues that matter to students and improve your experience at UWS.

Faculty Vice-Presidents

Your three part-time Faculty Vice-Presidents represent students across the University’s faculties.

They work with students, Class Reps and University staff to raise faculty-wide issues and make sure students can influence decisions about their education.

Class Reps are the backbone of our Student Voice system. They represent students on their course, listen to your views and raise them with University staff and your Union.

They help make sure students are heard and play an important part in improving learning, teaching and the wider student experience.

Student Network Representatives

Student Network Representatives make sure the voices and experiences of different groups of students are heard within your Union.

Our Student Network Representatives are:

  • Sustainability Network Representative
  • Women’s Network Representative
  • Disabled Students’ Network Representative
  • Black and Ethnic Minority Students’ Network Representative
  • LGBTQ+ Students’ Network Representative
  • International Students’ Network Representative

These representatives are appointed by Student Panels made up of students from the relevant communities. They work with their Student Networks, raise issues affecting the students they represent and help lead campaigns for change.

They also sit on your Union’s Executive Committee.

London and Postgraduate Research Representatives

We also have representatives who make sure that the experiences of students studying at our London Campus and postgraduate research students are heard within your Union.

Have your say

You do not need to be a representative to have your say. As a member of your Union, you can take part in:

  • the Annual Student Members’ Meeting
  • other Student Members’ Meetings
  • Faculty Forums
  • Campus Forums
  • Student Networks
  • the Societies Forum
  • working groups and campaigns

These give you different ways to raise issues, discuss ideas and decide what your Union should do.

Student Members’ Meetings are where students come together to discuss the big issues affecting students and decide what your Union should stand for.

The Annual Student Members’ Meeting is your Union’s main democratic meeting of the year. All Student Members can attend, speak and vote.

Other Student Members’ Meetings can be held during the year when students need to discuss or decide an important issue.

Faculty and Campus Forums

Faculty Forums bring together students from the same faculty to discuss their education and raise faculty-wide issues. They are led by the relevant Faculty Vice-President.

Campus Forums give students an opportunity to discuss issues affecting their campus, including facilities, services, travel and the wider campus experience.

Student Networks

Student Networks bring together students with shared identities, experiences or interests.

They provide a space to meet other students, discuss the issues affecting you and work with your Network Representative to make change happen. Networks can also organise activities, develop campaigns and raise matters with the Executive Committee.

Your Executive Committee

The Executive Committee brings together your elected officers and student representatives.

It helps turn decisions made by students into action, coordinates campaigns and makes sure your representatives are accountable to you. It also acts as the guardian of decisions made at the Annual Student Members’ Meeting.

There are lots of ways to shape what happens at UWS and in your Union. You can:

  • speak to one of your representatives
  • attend a Student Members’ Meeting
  • take part in a Faculty or Campus Forum
  • join a Student Network
  • submit a student suggestion
  • vote in your Union’s elections
  • stand for an elected position
  • apply to become a Student Network Representative
  • become a Class Rep
  • take part in surveys, including Everything Matters
  • join a campaign or working group

You can get involved in whichever way works best for you. You do not need any previous experience, and your Union can support you to take part.
