This policy petitions upcoming, and current, sabbatical officers to take real action on decolonisation. This action would include, but not be limited to, curriculum and our University environment. This would also include working with active campaigning groups including Decolonisation Scottish Education, NUS campaigns on decolonisation and direct the University to take real action on our University Environments. It is not enough to solely be not racist. We must be anti racist in every action we take.
Why you think it is important
Only a fifth of Universities have committed to decolonisation of curricululum. Even so simply decolonising curriculum does not lead to a decolonised university environment. BAME students are still not fully represented in elected roles, we still have statues and artworks which are offensive and it is simply not acceptable to state that discussions will take place in the future. The time for discussions has passed and the time for action is now.
Is there anything else you think we should know?
As a disabled LGBT+ woman we can use campaigning and real wins which have progressed our experiences to ensure that BAME students are valued as equal members of our community. NUS has active campaigns including festivals which we can sign up to. If this motion passes it means that our elected sabbatical officers must take action and uphold the University to expectations of anti racism.
